Vegetarian Cookbooks?

Posted by admin on May 6, 2010

Does anyone have any recommendations for good Vegetarian Cookbooks or books for beginning vegetarians?

Depends on what you are looking for.

If you are one person and looking for small, budget friendly meals than I would advise The Students Vegetarian Cookbook. It has nutritional info and it also has lots of recipes for one or two people using cheap, easy to find ingredients.

If you are trying to cook larger portions, the I would recomment 5 Ingredient Vegetarian Cookbook. It also has a lot of recipes, it only takes a short time to cook any of them, and it tries to use convenience foods like canned or frozen things to cut down on time. Plus you dont have to buy a lot of things.

Rachel Ray has a very nice vegetarian cookbook if you want a little more diversity and gourmet meals.

And if you just want incredible recipes (she is for vegans though) Dreena Burton has three cookbooks that are just great.

Also, the Idiots Guide to Becoming Vegetarian not only has great recipes, but it has all the nutritional info.

But the best resource I have found for nutrtional info is Mercy for Animals vegetarian starter pack (google it), it is a magazine that contains good nutritional info in a simple easy to follow format and they also have recipes.

Vegetarian Cookbooks With Great Southern and Mexican Flavors…

Posted by admin on May 5, 2010

How many vegetarian cookbooks are dedicated totally to those much loved down-home great Southern and Mexican flavours you remember growing up or and now miss that you are vegan or vegetarian.

A born food-lover, raised in California on “the best Mexican food in the country” and her father’s “traditional Southern soul food,” Alicia C. Simpson couldn’t imagine giving up her favorite dishes to become vegan. As a result Alicia created Quick and Easy Vegan Comfort Food . A vegan cookbook that matches the tastes of home—like fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, or a bowl of chili! All fee from animal, dairy and eggs.

This book is worth getting just for just for the mac and cheeze, orange chick’n, and buffalo bites recipes. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Did I mention the mac and cheeze? It’s not a nutritional yeast sauce! It’s incredible, and I can’t say enough about the barbecue sauce, too. I’m very picky about BBQ sauce and the one in this book is to live for. The fact that the recipe in this vegetarian cookbook have no “milks” or cheeses” in it and they are still creamy and rich is fabulous.

The only recipe thats not that great is the veggie burgers. They are are a bit mushy, but the mushroom gravy & alfredo sauce recipes are sooooooo good. Beware though, this is not a fat-free vegan cookbook, some of the recipes in this book are high in fat and calories so just be where, it’s called COMFORT food for a reason! But you will love the recipes.

The other great thing about this book is that the ingredients are easily accessible. In fact most of us have them in our pantries right now, which makes cooking from this vegetarian cookbook very very very easy.

The thing I really like about Alicia is that she is extremely down to earth and honest. She doesn’t come across as a know-it-all. She is kind and loving, which is not surprising. That’s what usually happens to one that doesn’t eat meat.

If you are worried about where to get your protein and calcium from? Or what you can use to substitute ingredients like egg’s and butter? Don’t worry. This vegetarian cookbook has a section dedicated to answering these questions and more. The book also addresses the issue that you don’t have to use meat substitutes all of the time to have a complete meal and there are products that can be used in place of a protein besides tofu.

If you have young children and teenagers like we do, you will find this to be one of those vegetarian cookbooks that makes your life a whole lot easier at meal time. Everyone loves the style of foods in this vegetarian cookbook. I think the nacho cheese recipe alone is worth the the price of the book alone.

I have a lot of Vegetarian Cookbooks but I find I use this book weekly and always with great results. I have yet to have a flop. Thanks to the author for doing such a terrific job.
